ECE Program Requirements

Students will apply directly with Carnegie Mellon College of Engineering Application Management System.

A complete application consists of:

  • Application form
  • Statement of purpose
  • Resume
  • Three recommendation letters (online submissions)
  • Transcripts
  • GRE score reports
  • TOEFL (preferred) or IELTS [Carnegie Mellon ETS Code: 2074]
  • Application fee ($75)

Statement Of Purpose

Students have the option to either upload their statement of purpose and resume or enter them directly into the online application as text.

Three Recommendation Letters (online submissions)

Once students access the online application, students will be required to enter the names, titles, and email addresses of their three recommenders. Their recommenders will then receive a link to the online recommendation form. All recommendations must be completed online. Any hard copy letters mailed to the ECE Admissions Office will be discarded.

Transcripts

Unofficial transcripts and score reports must be uploaded to the online application. This is what the Admissions Committee will use for review purposes. The ECE Admissions Office will only require an official hard copy of your transcript if you are admitted and decide to accept your offer of admission. In order for transcripts to be considered official, they must be received directly from the university in a signed and sealed envelope.

GRE General Test

The GRE General Test is required of all applicants, and students must submit official electronic GRE score reports to the ECE Admissions Office.

TOEFL (Preferred) or IELTS

All international applicants whose native language is not English must take the TOEFL (preferred) or IELTS Exam.

  • Scores must be received by the application deadline for the semester in which students are applying. The TOEFL is not required if the applicant will have graduated from a U.S. university by the time of enrollment or if the applicant is a Carnegie Mellon University student or alum.
  • A minimum overall score of 84, with minimum sub-scores of IBT-R 22, IBT-L 22, IBT-S 18, and IBT-W 22 are required.
  • Students must submit official electronic TOEFL/IELTS score reports to the ECE Admissions Office. Please request ETS to send your scores to Carnegie Mellon University institution code 2074. We will accept any Carnegie Mellon University department code, as long as the institution code is correct.
  • While students are strongly encouraged to take the TOEFL, students may submit IELTS if they are unable to take the TOEFL. The admissions committee looks for a minimum overall score of 7 on the IELTS, with minimum sub-scores of Reading-6.5, Listening-6.5, Speaking-6, and Writing-6. In order for IELTS to verify that the scores are going to the correct college/department, IELTS requires a physical address. Students should use: Carnegie Mellon University College of Engineering, 5000 Forbes Avenue, 119 Porter Hall, Pittsburgh, PA 15213.

Financial Aid

Financial aid is awarded upon admission in the form of research assistantships based on university resources and available openings. If available, financial aid is awarded for both the fall and spring semesters.

Virtually all graduate students in our research-intensive Ph.D. program receive financial aid in the form of fellowships that cover tuition, fees, and reasonable living expenses for the entire year. Thus, students can concentrate on coursework and research without financial concerns or interruptions. All applicants are considered for financial aid, no special form is required. All full-time students in the Ph.D. program engage in research under faculty guidance.

Students in our M.S. program are also eligible to receive scholarships that cover only tuition. Students in the M.S. program are primarily self-supported, but may be eligible to receive partial financial support in the form of hourly wages to support the teaching and research missions of the university. Only students in the Ph.D. program can be considered for financial support in the form of tuition and stipend.

Application Fee

Please note that a non-refundable application fee of $75 is required of all applicants. Applications will not be processed until payment is received and the application fee cannot be waived.

FAQs

What kind of programs are offered by the university?
CMKL University has been established to offer collaborative research and education between Carnegie Mellon University and King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang. CMKL offers top Ph.D. and M.S. programs in cutting-edge area of computer engineering and digital technologies including Software Systems, Cloud Computing, Internet of Things, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, and Robotics. Upon the program completion, graduates receive the degree from Carnegie Mellon University. All courses are conducted in English, both in Thailand and in the United States. The graduate students will initially start their academic journey in Thailand at CMKL university as the program default suggests and complete the program at Carnegie Mellon University in USA. Scholarships are available on a competitive basis.
Are there any scholarships available?
Yes, students admitted to the programs will be able to pursue a full scholarship from our partners. Admitted PhD students will be fully supported for the duration of 5 years in the form of industrial partner research fellowships, availability will be based on the partner’s conditions. Supports for PhD students include tuition fee and stipends so that the students can focus on coursework and research. Master's program scholarships will be available in the form of tuition fee support only. Partners may require the students to have a work contract with the company after graduation.
I have a full-time job, can I apply as a part-time student?
If you apply for our Doctoral or Master programs, you must be able to participate as a full-time student. Our degree programs require a significant amount of time and dedication from the students to complete the coursework and related research. Additional professional certificates and training will also be available for existing workforce looking to refresh their knowledge. More details regarding the continuing education will be coming soon.
Can I apply for more than one program?
You may apply for more than one program.  On the online application, simply rank your programs of interest in order of preference and you will be considered for each program that you include.
Am I still under consideration for any other ECE programs?
No, we do not anticipate making any other offers for the other ECE programs.
During my year at CMKL, will I be in contact with a CMU professor?
The Vice President and Program Director are both CMU ECE adjunct faculty, in regular contact with CMU faculty and community members. Students are welcome to reach out to them.
Who are the 'industry partners' mentioned on the website?
The industry partners listed here are local Thai companies with international business.
Are there any opportunities for fee waivers or scholarships?
Some scholarship opportunities are available at CMKL. More information can be found at this page.
What is the fee structure of the program?
Please refer to your admission letter for the specific tuition amount. The semester rate is roughly equivalent to the CMU semester rate, but students will pay for four semesters, rather than three semesters (the length of the MS in ECE program). Students will pay tuition and fees directly to CMKL University, as they handle the financial administration of the program.
Who will be teaching the courses?
The courses will be taught by a combination of CMU faculty (some are adjunct) and CMKL faculty. All courses are taught in-person. Currently, there is no option for distance learning. Please note that under certain circumstance this may be subject to change. Students and faculty will be notified of any changes accordingly. Updated 4/7/2020

What are the credit requirements for the degree from CMKL in Thailand?
The CMKL credit requirements are the same as ECE's requirements, but with one additional research project required, which will count as credit for the CMKL MS degee. Research projects at CMU may be available for pay or credit, however they are optional and would be up to students to pursue individually.
What degrees will I earn after graduating?
Upon graduation from the two-year program, students will earn a MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from both CMKL and CMU. The degree that you earn from CMU will be identical to other ECE CMU graduates.
What is the exact timeline of the program?
The CMU-Thailand MS dual-degree is a two-year program. Students will spend their first year at CMKL, Thailand and one year at CMU, Pittsburgh as the program default. We are in the process of officially amending the CMU-Thailand dual-degree program to allow students to begin at either location. However, we can still allow students to begin at CMU, Pittsburgh and spend their final two semesters at CMKL, Thailand. For any student who finds it necessary to enroll their first year at CMU, Pittsburgh, we require them to write an official requesting email to CMKL Admission directly.
